Student Spotlight: Jenna Princing

(Picture includes everyone competing at Worlds, Jenna is in the second row third person in on the right side)

Jenna Princing is a junior who is involved in many activities at Valley. Outside of school, she does not fail to become involved in her community. Sailing has been a major aspect of her life since she started at a young age. She was able to participate in Worlds which is a sailing competition in Wisconsin with teams from all around the nation. The team Jenna was a part of was scheduled to sail for four days. On Wednesday, their first day sailing the team did practice starts and one practice race. They did not race Thursday due to lack of wind, although a race did start but ended up getting called halfway through. Friday involved two races with intense wind and roughly ten-foot waves. Three races happened on Saturday, and a fourth was scheduled but got canceled since there was no wind. Usually, at a Regatta (sailing competition) people bring their own boats, but since others came from overseas volunteers brought boats for the teams to use. Between every race, they would take their sails off one boat and put them on a different one in order to keep things fair. The boats were all a little different which is why they did this. Jenna’s favorite part of the experience was going in after the last race on Friday. Winds were blowing around 30mph and the waves were huge. Her team had to go in because of the conditions but the whole way in was reaching (a reach is when you’re perpendicular to the wind, and it’s very easy to sail). She was very relieved when the day was over and the boat was flying through the waves. They managed to plane (when the boat is lifted out of the water) a few times on the way which Jenna had never done before. Jenna had also become desensitized to the wind and waves from the races before.
