As the end of the semester approaches, and students begin to worry about studying for exams, there is nothing better than releasing stress through listening to Christmas music. To decide what the best Christmas song is, a bracket of Spotify’s top 25 most played Christmas songs was posted and Valley students were asked to vote their favorites. The competition was close and exciting, and many songs moved on to the next round by just a couple votes.
Here’s the results of the competition:
“Last Christmas” was voted the winner of the best Christmas song of all time. When asked if they agreed with the results, a little over half of Valley students agreed, which is understandable, considering how the song won by only one vote. The other half preferred the second placing song, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” or one of the other songs, like “Jingle Bell Rock.”
“Last Christmas” was originally written by George Michael and performed by Wham!. Since then, it has been covered by several other artists including Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Gwen Stefani, and Coldplay. While the song actually has very little to do with Christmas and is more about a failed relationship, “Last Christmas” is one of the most popular songs to play during Christmastime. Also, the song has recently been made into a movie, starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding.
So, as Christmas nears and you get into the holiday spirit, be sure to give “Last Christmas” a listen. Whether you agree with the results or not, surely we can all agree that Christmas music brings a cheery mood to all who listen and it sets the tone for the holiday season.
