A lot of people make the common mistake of mixing up your and you’re, and their, there, and they’re. I see them everywhere, and you probably have seen the mix-ups places too. People mostly use the wrong word out of laziness or they just don’t realize that it’s wrong.
Your
Your is used when you want to show ownership of something and it’s possessive. For example: “YOUR dog is cute.” or “Where is YOUR house?”
You’re
You're is a conjunction, meaning it’s a combination of two words, in this case, you and are. Whenever you are using “you’re” think of it as saying you are. You’re is used when describing someone or sometimes in questions. For example: “YOU’RE really pretty.” or “YOU’RE going, right?” or “YOU’RE welcome.”
Common Mistakes
It’s more common for people to put your instead of you're. The one I see most often is, “your welcome” instead of, “you’re welcome”. The correct usage is you’re because it’s saying “you are welcome” if you use your, you’re saying that the person owns welcome. That doesn’t make any sense, does it?
Their
Their is used to show multiple people having ownership of something and is possessive. For example: “THEIR house” or “THEIR house”.
There
There is either used for a location as an adverb(opposite of here), or as a pronoun in some cases. For example: “I had to go there to get my papers” as an adverb, and “There is someone there already” as a pronoun.
They’re
They’re is a conjunction of the words they and are, or they and were. For example: “They’re going to the mall” or “They’re here yesterday”.
Common Mistakes
This one is not as common as mixing up you’re and your, but it still happens every once in a while. One of the most common mistakes is putting there in the place of their.
